Marcella Esther Spalding, 99, passed away in The Dalles, Oregon on December 14, 2017. She was born in Goldendale, Washington (one of identical twins) on November 18, 1918 to Minnie (Wilson) and Ari Short. Their homestead was at Cliffs, Washington on the Columbia River (where the Harvey Aluminum Plant was built). Marcella worked on many of the farms in the Centerville area for room and board so she could finish high school. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1937.
On October 12, 1941, Marcella married Daryl Spalding in Yakima, Washington. She had a career with the United States Department of Agriculture as a secretary. Mrs. Spalding was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and very active in her community. She enjoyed playing Bingo and was always giving to others, often baking treats and giving them away.
Mrs. Spalding is survived by her sons Bill Spalding (Kelli) of Murdock, Washington and Mike Spalding (Kathy) of Vancouver, Washington; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Daryl, infant daughter Janie Spalding, twin sister Margaret McKune, brother Robert Short and sister Helen Scholl. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 22, 2017 at Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel in Goldendale, Washington with interment at Mountain View Cemetery.
