Obituary of Jerry Shepard

Jerry Douglas Shepard, 80, of Castle Rock, Washington, died Sunday December 16 at Canterbury Gardens in Longview, Washington. He was born at the family home in West Kelso on June 29, 1932 to the late Donald Rae Shepard, Sr. and Lazette Zuercher. Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years Arlene Barbara Cameron. They were married on his birthday, June 29, in 1977 at their home in Stabler, WA. He was predeceased in December 1996 by Ethel Barbara Hixon Bittner Shepard, the mother of his seven children which includes two sets of twins. Jerry was a Korean War Army Veteran. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Jerry graduated from Kelso High School in 1950, Lewis and Clark College in 1954 with a BS in History, and a Master of Education degree from Lewis and Clark College in 1958. Jerry retired in 1987 from the Carson School District, where he worked for 28 years as a teacher, counselor, coach, principal, and superintendant of the Carson Grade School and Wind River Middle School. During his retirement he worked part-time as an award-winning insurance representative for Neighbors of Woodcraft in Portland Oregon. Jerry was the Washington Education Association Ethics Committee chairman and representative to the National Education Association in Washington DC to rewrite the National Code of Ethics. He was a Mason and a member of the American Legion. During the forty years Jerry lived in Skamania County he loved fishing, hunting and camping with friends, family, wife Arlene and faithful dog Captain. In 2002 Jerry published a memoir, "My Childhood Memories." In 2005 he published a second volume, "Return to the Cowlitz, Life Journey of Jerry Douglas Shepard." Jerry's last book, "Casting into the Wind," was published in 2008. Jerry is survived by his seven children: Luna Denise Shepard Hauser and husband Mike of Portland, OR; Jay S. Shepard and wife Lynn of Longview, WA; Julie L. Shepard Johanson and husband Carl of Home Valley, WA; Eilene L. Shepard White and husband Gary of Stabler, WA; Todd F. Shepard and wife Angie of Kennewick, WA; Alicia A. Shepard of Kelso, WA; and Erin B. Shepard Anthony of Gig Harbor, WA, and by his sister Mary Jane Witter Loehrke and husband Walter of Stabler, WA. He has nine grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. His older brother was the late Donald Rae Shepard.
