Obituary of Geraldine Esther Shields

Geraldine Esther Shields was born on April 8, 1940 in Portland, Oregon to Gerald and Margaret Dyde. She passed away February 29, 2020 in Hood River, Oregon. Her childhood years were spent in Sellwood. She loved animals and had a dog named Perky that she and her future sister-in-law, Jean, would dress up in doll clothes and push around in a doll buggy. She also loved riding the streetcar down to Oaks Park where she would spend countless hours roller skating. She attended Cleveland High School. On August 8, 1959 she married the love of her life, Robert Shields. They lived in Portland until 1964 when Bob was transferred to Seattle for work. They moved back to Portland in 1970 when Bob transferred back. In 1978 they moved to White Salmon. They were together for almost 53 years when Bob passed away in May 2012. They had two children. Geraldine loved to bake and spent countless hours every Christmas baking and decorating beautiful cookies. Her house was always decorated for every holiday. She also baked and decorated cakes, creating many beautiful wedding cakes. She and Bob built their home in White Salmon. They loved their house in the woods and hosted many snowmobile parties over the years. She loved the role of hostess and was always serving up hot cocoa, cookies and pies. Later in life she became a Corrections Officer, a job that she loved and in which she took tremendous pride. She is survived by her daughter Julie Stephens, son Steven Shields, son-in-law John Stephens, daughter-in-law Sonya Shields; grandchildren Sarah VanHoose, Hannah Knott, Melissa Ybarra, John Robert Stephens, Caleb Shields and Emily Shields as well as 6 great grandchildren.
